Chen-Style Taiji Single Broadsword (Dao)
Chen-style Taiji Broadsword is one of the short weapons routines in Taiji practice. The original routine contained only 13 movements, hence the name “Thirteen Broadsword.”
From 1930 to 1938, the renowned Taijiquan master Chen Zhaopi of the 18th generation of the Chen family, while teaching in Nanjing, added 9 movements to the original routine, forming the Taiji Broadsword routine now practiced in Chenjiagou.
The Chen-style Taiji Broadsword routine is compact yet refined, with each posture demonstrating practical application. Its 13 broadsword techniques — including rolling, circling, thrusting, blocking, chopping, hacking, lifting, intercepting, coiling, shaking, framing, wiping, and raising — fully embody the characteristics of Chen-style Taijiquan: the balance of hardness and softness, alternation of fast and slow movements, jumping and leaping, relaxed and springy power, sticking and following, and spiraling into emptiness. It possesses the fierce momentum of a tiger and the force of splitting Mount Hua, while also applying the principle of “using short weapons as long weapons.”
During practice, the hands, eyes, body methods, and footwork must coordinate closely. When one part moves, the whole body moves; power should flow continuously in one complete breath. The broadsword techniques must be clear, intentional, and standardized. Practice should include wrapping around the head, coiling around the back and waist, with large chopping and hacking motions executed with majestic spirit. As the martial saying goes: “For single broadsword, observe the hands; for double broadswords, observe the footwork.” Therefore, emphasis is placed on the coordination between the hand and the broadsword. The right hand holds the broadsword while the left hand forms a palm, changing according to the technique — sometimes supporting the blade overhead to assist power, sometimes pressing the back of the blade to roll left and right, sometimes bending the elbow to guard above the head, wiping along the blade during chopping, and pushing behind the blade during thrusting. In summary, the palm techniques and body methods must be fully coordinated.
During practice, one must first establish a solid foundation in martial skill so that power can issue to the four extremities upon movement and return to the dantian in stillness. Once the routine is mastered, the body drives the broadsword, and the broadsword leads the body’s turning. Everywhere, the waist acts as the axis, with chopping, hacking, lifting, thrusting, jumping, springing, shaking power, and an imposing martial spirit.

Chen-Style Taiji Spring & Autumn Broadsword
Chen-style Spring and Autumn Broadsword, also known as the “Green Dragon Crescent Blade,” is one of the long weapons in Chen-style Taiji weapon routines and was also one of the weapons most favored by Taijiquan ancestor Chen Wangting. In his later years, Chen Wangting wore a long flowing beard and frequently used the broadsword, earning him the nickname “Comparable to Guan Gong.” At that time, Jiang Fa studied under Chen Wangting and resembled Zhou Cang in appearance. When a portrait of the elderly Chen Wangting was painted, Jiang Fa stood behind him holding the broadsword as a memorial depiction. Since the famous Three Kingdoms general Guan Yu was known for wielding the “Green Dragon Crescent Blade,” the weapon inherited this name.
The names of the Chen-style Spring and Autumn Broadsword routine are composed of thirty mnemonic verses, differing from other routines. In most routines, one name generally represents one movement, whereas in this broadsword routine, a single verse may contain several movements.
The Chen-style Spring and Autumn Broadsword routine is well-structured, with coordinated upper and lower movements and balanced left and right transitions. Its techniques — including splitting, chopping, lifting, hanging, slashing, wiping, intercepting, blocking, raising, thrusting, pushing, dragging, framing, and flourishing — are executed clearly, cleanly, and decisively, truly reflecting the style of “the broadsword like a fierce tiger.” Every posture and movement carries a majestic and powerful spirit.
When practicing the broadsword, a solid martial arts foundation is essential, especially strong waist power, leg strength, and arm strength. Because the broadsword is a large and heavy weapon, it requires abundant internal energy together with waist, leg, and arm power to wield it freely and naturally in splitting, chopping, pushing, slashing, turning, rolling, circling, and pressing techniques. Due to its formidable destructive power, the broadsword is honored as the “Commander of All Weapons.”

Chen-Style Taiji Sword (Jian)
Chen-style Taiji Straight Sword is one of the short weapons within Taijiquan routines. For hundreds of years, it has been widely practiced in Chenjiagou and is one of the oldest weapon routines.
Chen-style Taiji Straight Sword consists of forty-nine forms. The routine is logically structured with compact transitions and clear sword techniques, including thrusting, splitting, lifting, hanging, pointing, wiping, supporting, framing, sweeping, intercepting, stabbing, pushing, and neutralizing. Combined with the expansive body methods and agile, stable footwork of Taijiquan, it alternates between hardness and softness, concealment and appearance, sticking and following, leaping and evasive changes. It fully embodies the characteristics of Chen-style Taiji Sword: using the body to drive the sword, continuous flow, spiraling rotations, transformation between storing and issuing force, harmonizing hardness and softness, and alternating fast and slow movements. It also expresses martial applications such as sticking without separating, penetrating every opening, deceptive luring, unpredictable transformations, extending and withdrawing, and powerful issuing force.
Practicing Chen-style Taiji Straight Sword should be built upon a solid foundation in Taijiquan forms. Only then can one guide qi with intention, use qi to drive the body, extend force to the sword tip, unify the entire body, and achieve smooth natural rotation. A martial saying states: “Practice the broadsword like a fierce tiger; practice the sword like a swimming dragon.” Therefore, sword practice resembles empty-hand Taiji practice — movements flow like drifting clouds and flowing water, continuous, deep, and rounded, while issuing force resembles a golden lion shaking its mane, changing instantly and endlessly. Mastering the sword not only strengthens the body and improves health, but also refreshes the spirit and brings artistic enjoyment.

Chen-Style Taiji Double Broadswords
Chen-style Taiji Double Broadswords is one of the dual-weapon routines in Chen-style Taiji weapon practice. For hundreds of years, it has been widely practiced in Chenjiagou and is one of the oldest dual-weapon routines.
The Double Broadsword routine consists of thirty-five forms. Its structure is well arranged, transitions are compact, sword techniques are clear, and applications are realistic. Using techniques such as splitting, chopping, lifting, hanging, thrusting, intercepting, blocking, pressing, pushing, supporting, crossing, framing, and flourishing, together with the expansive body methods and agile, stable footwork of Chen-style Taijiquan, it fully expresses the characteristics of Chen-style Taijiquan: harmonizing hardness and softness, alternating fast and slow movements, and relaxed, lively, spring-like power.
Practice of the Double Broadsword routine requires coordinated body movement and close integration between the broadswords and footwork. Hence the saying: “For single broadsword, observe the hands; for double broadswords, observe the footwork.” This emphasizes the importance of footwork in double broadsword practice. To master the footwork, one must first build a strong foundation in empty-hand routines. With solid martial fundamentals, the practice can truly embody the style of flowing blades, swift footwork, wrapping around the head and body, fast and powerful execution, majestic spirit, and the harmonious blending of hardness and softness.
