The legacy of Chen-style Taijiquan in Malaysia is built upon generations of dedicated practice and cultural preservation. Tracing its roots back to the Chen Village in Henan, China, our association serves as a bridge between ancient tradition and modern refinement. We uphold the rigorous standards of the original martial art while fostering a community that values discipline, tranquility, and the profound depth of Tai Chi philosophy. Our heritage is not just in the forms we practice, but in the spirit of resilience and grace passed down from master to student.
Origin of Taijiquan
To understand the origin of Taijiquan, one must first understand the meaning of “Taiji.” Taiji refers to the Great Void. “Tai” signifies the utmost greatness, while “Xu” means emptiness or void. The Great Void is a state of complete emptiness, yet filled with vital energy (Qi), serving as the dwelling of spirit. The subtle essence of Qi reaches everywhere without exception, forming the origin of all creation and transformation. Taiji moves with Qi to generate Yang, and becomes still to generate Yin. This is the principle of Taiji giving rise to Yin and Yang.
“Yin and Yang” is a fundamental concept in ancient philosophy, used to explain the unity, opposition, and transformation of different properties within all things. The Yin-Yang concept embodies characteristics such as opposition and unity, interdependence, coordination, and transformation. Based on these principles, Taijiquan was created as a system of movements that harmonize softness and hardness, integrate internal and external aspects, connect upper and lower body, alternate between fast and slow, unify form and intent, and incorporate both forward and reverse silk-reeling energy. The harmony of Yin and Yang forms Taiji, hence this martial art is called Taijiquan. With consistent practice according to proper Taijiquan principles, one can gradually attain the level of balanced Yin and Yang, entering a state described as “with a single movement, Taiji is expressed; with Taiji in motion, all returns to emptiness.” At this level, the principles of Taiji become fully active, Qi flows freely, vital energy is abundant, Yin and Yang are balanced, and the entire body—internally and externally—functions as one integrated whole, like a perfect and unified Taiji circle.
